On A Night Like This

On a night like this
We share a kiss
At your door
I want more.

'My dear,' I say,
'I want to stay'
You say 'No'
'You must go.'

I plead my case a while
Your enigmatic smile's
Already telling me everything I need to know.

Resigned to my fate
I say 'my dear, it's late
And though you know I'd love to stay
I must go.'

On a note like this
We trade a final kiss
And then goodbye
I must fly.

On a flight like this
I take a step and miss
the stair
Walking on air.

Then try some Bossa Nova
Up Sherbourne then cross over
To a small seculuded street without a sound

West on Isabella
singin' a capella
Taking comfort in the knowledge
I'm the craziest one around
(Scat)

On a nut like this
I would place emphasis
Upon the fact
That he's cracked

On a mutt like this
I defy analysis
To explain
His brain

Sightlessly he wanders
Endlessly he ponders
Every possible twist and turn this thing could take.

Walks into a post
But what distracts him most
Is trying to keep his balance
As the earth begins to shake

Ooo.

You can do it now
One step at a time and you'll get there.
Home, I mean.
Watch it! Watch it! Oh.

Mayflower

Deep in the woods
where nobody goes
At the side of the road
at the end of the snows.

On the first breath of air
that the warm breezes bring
Mayflower, Mayflower
promising Spring.

The Mayflower is delicate
and the Mayflower is mild.
Nestling modestly
out in the wild.

And when it has gone
no sign where it's been
Patches of carpet
of ivory and green

Clusters of flowers
that open and close
I love the land
where the Mayflower grows

O the winters are long here
and bitter and cold.

They're the test of the young
They're the bane of the old.

And the night seems unending
but the day will begin
when the Mayflower welcomes
The morning again.

O the Mayflower is tiny
and the Mayflower is brief.
And the sight of the Mayflower
is such a relief

O the hours I dream
of the moments I've spend
lying in Mayflower's
heavenly scent.

Lost for a while
to the world and it's woes
I love the land
where the Mayflower grows

Where the woodsmoke still rises
and the fresh water flows
across Nova Scotia
Where the Mayflower grows.

Anna Marie

Anna Marie. Anna Marie.

We met across a crowded table somewhere.
I couldn't say a word there.
I tried so hard not to stare.
I thought I saw you maybe give me the eye.
I wondered who was the guy sitting beside you?

Anna Marie. Anna Marie.

I asked a friend of mine if you were alone.
She said she didn't know
but she thought so.
She gave me your number and I gave you a call
but all I got back was your answer machine.

Anna Marie. Anna Marie.

We met a few days later out in the street.
You seemed happy to meet.
We went and had something to eat.
We talked a bit about the things that we like.
You told me horses and your new mountain bike.

Anna Marie. Anna Marie.

A band of street musicians started to play.
The air came alive in the outdoor cafe.
The waitress smiled as she balanced her tray
and did a little dance all the way down the aisle.

Anna Marie. Anna Marie.

For the rest of the day we wandered the town
where the bag lady lies, where the bus turns around
where the car radios with the windows rolled down
play a Beatles’ song that makes me think of you.

Anna Marie. Anna Marie.

Well the money comes in but it's so hard to hold.
If you've got it you're hot, if you haven't you're cold.
The Royal Tower may be made out of gold
but all I see in it is Anna Marie.
.

Anna Marie. Anna Marie.

Where you may be now I have no way to know.
You don't say anything, you just pick up and go.
There's an ache in your heart babe and it's hurting you so
but I know you're the first to laugh about it all.

Anna Marie. Anna Marie. Anna Marie. Anna Marie.
La la la la la la la la.

Dog

Dog

All they do is hang around the table
hopin' someone'll throw em some food

They're either scratchin' themselves
Or else they're doin' something rude.

You wak up in the morning
ito discover that your shoe's been chewed

Well you can tear your hair and cry
but they will only wonder why
You're a crazy knind of a guy
but they love you - dog

Dog

They can hear the bacon calling
even if it's only falling to the floor

But at their master's voice they don't hear so good no more

You get to spend a lot of money
And get a lot of pactice opening the door

So they can tack their mudyd paws
And they don't obey no laws
And they're known to be the major cause
Of making more - dog.

Dog

Flea

Dog

They give 'em away fror free

Dog

There's a hundred ways to train 'em
On the etiquette of right and wrong
But they will drag stuff in
You ahve to handle with a pair of tongs

When company comes they always wanna
Stick their noses where they don't below

You got dog hairs in your soup
And I for one won't stoop
To jumping through their hoop
I'm talking abou - dog.

Dog

Drool

Dog

They make their masters talk like a fool
"Is you my precious little bundle of joy, poopsie
woopsie? Yes, you is!"

Dog

Whatever you do Never accidentally rattle their chain

Or you'll be walking 'em through
The wind and the snow and the rain

Waggin' their tails with their tongues hangin' out
Uses all of their brain

They'll clean your table with a single swipe

And your dish'll never need a wipe
I guess he forgot about your slippers and pipe
I'm talking about - dog.

Their breath is somthing wicked
Their motto is "eat it or lick it"
We're a dog's best meal ticket
I'm done talkin' about dog now.

On My Own

It's good to see you darlin'
I've been gone so long
I've been gone so long my darlin',
on my own

I had a little trouble
back along the highway
back along the highway darlin',
I broke down.

And no, there wasn't nothin' missin'.
And yeah, I did know what I was doin'.
But I never meant to stop there, darlin',
in that town

So I just came to tell you
I'll be leaving in the morning,
And I'll be leavin' in the morning, darlin',
on my own.

Granny 1

Granny's in the kitchen putting flour on the board
Grandpa fixed the faucet and she's making a reward
The flour rises on a puff of breeze
Sos he has to turn her hear around to sneeze.

Later at the over with the cookies on a tin
THe doorbell ring, the dog walks in
Draggin' in a dirty old sock
Granny takes a gander at the clock.

Old Leona, layin' on a magazine
On a sunny afternoon
Granny hums herself a tune
Knows she may as well enjoy herself
Things'll be hopping soon.

There's a picture on a table in the corner
In a frame that Granny ordered from the store
It's a photo of her only sister Anna
Who she doesn't see a lot of anymore

Now Anna is the younger of the sisters
She was known for all the travelling of her youth
And now she entertains the rady listerers
In the asylum she discovered in her search for truth.

Holy Anna, lady of the mezzanine
She believes in grace
Living at a stately pace
Life as an unfolding
Rather than a race.

And keeping up the family tradition
Eddy's in the yard
More like a burden thn an addition
But you gott give him credit
'Cause he tries so hard.

His Iris is determined to be a modern
And yet he harbours hope
Working in his garden
Melon cauliflower canteloupe.

Spends an hour daily,
Practicing his ukele
He plants by the moon
He tends around his pet caccoon
All his seedlings sing to him
"Don't forget to water us soon."

Meanwhile in the kitchen
Steam is pouring from the spout
The doorbell rings
The dog walks out.

Granny glances fondly at her tap
And takes her tea away to take her nap.

Granny 2

Grandpa and his friends
are playing crib out in the shed
With their hankies in their pockets
and their hats upon their hears
Spittin' their tobacco at a can
Hopin' to deal themselves the perfect hand.

Norman's in the corner sitting on a broken chair
He's a little hard of hearing
and he recently cut his hair
A local lad, he likes to hang around
And when they need some mix he'll go to town.

Takes a lot of pride in the bicycle that he is ridin'
Earned it chopping wood
Everyone knows his work is good
Saving up to buy a carrier
For delivering in the neighbourhood.

And summer's getting busier and later in the fall
Eddy'd like to finish up the mural in the hall
All it needed was a lighter shade
Now it sort of looks like half of a parade.

He is out inventing something back in the garage.
Whatever it's supposed to be
it's gatting rath large.
He take a break to go and check the mail
Over the weeks he's beaten down a trail.
So desirous is he of a work of Iris
From her new address
Maybe this time she'll say 'yes'.
Bet she keeps her new place spotless
Lordy, how she hates a mess.

Granny's at her happiest at any homely chore
The things that give her pleasure most would hardly fill a drawer
A souvenir or two from years ago
And her lucky hat she always wears to bingo

And everywhere she looks
another reminder of the kids
A nick, a mark, a chip, a tear,
A scratch across the fridge
And everywhere the air of histoy
And not without its share of mystery.

Even if the kitty dumped the goldfish bowl
Who burned the hoesl in the linoleam?
Baseballs through the screen
Farewell lovely soup tureen
Tucked away for mending someday
The pieces of a figurine.

And granny's in the kitchen on her rolling pin.
The doorell rings
The dog walks in
The sunlight casts a pattern on the wall.
And anymore's the same so that is all.

Sweet Evening Breeze

You blow with the wind
You drift with the tide
Are you trying to fit in?
Or are you trying to hide? You say anything
Then you do as you please
You blow warm and cool
Like a sweet evening breeze.

When you blew in without a care
You were like a breath of air
Breezy as a summer's day
Blowing all the clouds away.

But when our love brought us together
It brought along a change of weather
Did I hear you breathe a sigh
As you whispered your goodbye?

Repeat chorus.

Telephone Pole Blues

My love for you is like a, house on fire
It's going nowhere, but it's running wild.
Now won't you give me your jewlery, so I can pay my rent.
If I sang you a song, won't you get me elected the president.

Your love for me is like a rocking chair
Tipping back and forth, but ain't going nowhere.
I got nowhere to go myself, and I got nowhere to stay.
If you gave me a hundred dollar bill, I'll take you to a matinee.

Our love was like a country song
A little novelty piece about two minutes long.
But if you wanna hear it I think I can tell you something, that might make you laught.
You're just a two dollar habit, but I only got a buck and a half.

Our love was like a telephone pole
Under tention, in a hole
But if you wanna see it, I think I can still show you one last trick
I'm gunna take that big old telephone pole, I'm gunna turn in into a little toothpick.

How to Build A Fence

First you dig a hole
Then you plant a pole
Then you find a nail
and hammer on a rail.

And when you're done with that
you find another slat
or two or three or more
and fasten as before.

Then walk to the other end
and do it all again
and you have build
a section of a fence.

Now before it gets too late
you'd better think about a gate.
A post on either side
with help you as a guide.

Then just keep building sections
off in both directions
until you reach a border
which you must turn in order

To satisfy your nighbour
and to save some extra labour
And while you're there anyway place
on either side a brace,
and you have built a corner
for your fence

Unwind a coil of wire
or roll of twice along the entire
line desired for your fence to follow.
And make sure all the posts,
especially going up a hill, are plumb,
and likewise if you're coming down a hollow.

Now you're almost done;
back where you've begun.
A final capping touch
Will help your structure much

With the aid of a line and a level
cut the tops off on a bevel
to shed the rain and snow
and clean up as you go.

And that is roughly
how to build a fence.

This is just to say

I remember
The first time you came over.
You said you couldn't stay
You had to go.

But when I saw
Your likee smile, I knew
I could get you
On the telephone.

I said 'Stay while longer,
We could listen to the radio'.
I told you everything
Late that night,
Not so very long ago.

We used to meet
Out in the street
When I was broke
You couldn't have been sweeter.

We'd sit in restauants
And laugh and talk
Or take a walk.
Maybe see the people coming out of the theatre.

When the wather got bad,
We were happy just to stay inside.
I'm sure you will recall,
If you think of it at all,
Those were the good times that we had.

But then one night
we had a scene
I don't remember
how it started anymore.

I said som things
I didn't really mean
It ended with you
walking out the door.

I was hurt and full of pride
It took about a week or so 'itl I could see things from your side.
But when I tried to call
You didn't want to talk at all
That was how I learned our love had died.

I woke up this morning
You were on my mind.
I thought I'd let you sit there for a while.Imagine how surprised I was to find,
I couldn't do a thing but sit and smile.

What I'm doing here,
Suddenly, it all becomes so clear
and this is just to say,
that I remember you.
It's now the fall of another year.

Tonight

Let the rain wash the dust off my shoes tonight.
Let precipitation carry away the blues tonight
Let silhouetted lovers
Linger under cover
While the lights turn
Will we ever learn
What’s so important anyway?
Let the head bone connect to the muse tonight
Let the pavement reflect all the golden hues tonight
Let your people go
Aw the least you can do is
Let traffic flow tonight
Is how I’m feeling apropos of nothing but
A random thought inspired by a comment
Overheard in passing.

Let the cops on the beat feel fine tonight
Let the city streets be filled with the scent of pine tonight
Let bundle laden shoppers
Dig out all the proper
Change for the bus
While the rest of us
Make sure their bags don’t go nowhere
Let the clouds brush the moon ‘til it shines tonight
Let the trees commune among the man made lines tonight
Fill my umbrella up
Talk about an overflowing cup tonight
Is how I’m feeling apropos of nothing but
A random thought inspired by a comment
Overheard in passing.

Is how I’m feeling apropos of nothing but
A random thought inspired by a comment
Overheard in passing.

Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm
That's what is sorely needed.
Enthusiasm
To ensure the worl'd resources
aren't depleted.
Enthusiasm
That's what we've got to build
Before we're killed -
Enthusiasm.

Enthusiasm.
That's what is sorely needed.
Enthusiasm
To ensure that all the bad guys are defeated.
Enthusiasm
That's what we've got to build
Before we're killed -
